You+HP = first-rate picture-making that is easy, convenient and fun!

by Rodney L. Merrill
Aug. 2004 -- Creating a memory for yourself and others that really captures the people and events that make life meaningful for you can be one of the most important things you do, and one of the most frustrating. Luckily, the HP digital picture-taking experience just keeps getting better.
HP has been hard at work developing technologies that help take the guesswork out of digital photography. Called HP Real Life technologies, these amazing solutions make it easy to produce great photos that are crisp, realistic and true to life. From capturing the image to printing at home or on the go, HP Real Life technologies touch every step of the digital photography process. These include Adaptive Lighting technology, which eliminates unwanted shadows from pictures taken in high contrast environments; panorama, which lets you preview several images joined into a panorama; and HP Image Advice, a feature that actually analyzes photos then provides you with tips on how to improve future shots so that you can learn to take better pictures as you go along. Together, these intelligent features take much of the guesswork out of digital photography and add to the enjoyment of capturing life's moments. Once you initiate it, HP's in-camera red-eye removal, an industry first, can remove red-eye from photos instantly and right on the camera — no PC processing required. Pioneered by HP, all these technologies are integrated into the HP Photosmart R-series digital cameras. (See sidebar for the low-down on what makes this tech trick tick.)
HP has been driving the pace of new technologies in digital image science for years. Our digital cameras, scanners and printers show the results of our efforts. All have some things in common: quality, ease of use and affordability. Now HP's Vivera Inks take it all to the next level with brilliant colors and crisp blacks that make your work vibrant and life-like.

Latest HP-UX 11i Books Add Value by Maximizing Productivity and Performance While Minimizing Costs

By Rodney L. Merrill
Apr. 2004 -- In a horsepower competition, having the most powerful team of horses will not guarantee a win if the horses pull in all directions. High-level performance requires that raw power be made adaptive and agile through training. That's the idea behind the two latest HP-UX books in the HP Professional Books series.
HP-UX 11i Tuning and Performance and HP-UX 11i Internals are designed to support the end user in getting all the horses to pull in the same direction and to pull efficiently. But who is this end user? Who would benefit from owning these books? Designers and developers, says professional software developer Glen S. Rosen, who believes HP-UX 11i Internals is "a good quality text for system developers, device driver developers, kernel developers, compiler developers and techies who just want to learn more." Master Software Engineer Reza Taheri proclaims that "... every HP-UX system administrator or application developer that cares about performance should have a copy" of HP-UX 11i Tuning and Performance. And Stanislav Moravec, an engineer on the HP-UX Kernel Team for Global Systems Engineering, dubs HP-UX 11i Internals"... a good handbook for HP-UX support and development personnel, advanced HP-UX system administrators and consultants, people involved in design of operating systems, computer science students and teachers."

RFID — Sensible Innovations for Adaptive Enterprise
HP R&D is paving the way for rapid growth in sentient environments

by Rodney L. Merrill
Oct. 2004 -- It's 2:00 o'clock in the morning. Do you know where your widgets are? You would if you were part of the growing network of businesses using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
While its uses are new, RFID technology was used back in World War II to distinguish friend from foe.(1) So why are forward thinking businesses so interested in this old technology? Well, as the old song says: "Cause ev'rything old is new again."
What makes it new is innovation. Recent developments with RFID standards and technology are poised to make revolutionary changes in distribution chains, warehousing, retailing, and a host of other business areas.(2) And, as the physical size and the cost of RFID technology continues to decrease, so does the feasibility of its widespread deployment in supply chain tracking and monitoring.
 |
RFID & Adaptive Enterprise |
"RFID technology is a perfect fit with HP's Adaptive Enterprise strategy," says Ulrich van der Meer, HP Vice President, Manufacturing Industries. "The strategy centers on business and IT being synchronized to capitalize on change. RFID drives synchronization to the next level by providing the potential for multiple levels of real-time information to all participants in the supply chain. And HP's experience makes us uniquely positioned in the industry to provide RFID-related services."
RFID supports the Adaptive Enterprise concept by speeding up supply chains while simultaneously making them more visible. It facilitates faster and smarter business decisions based on real-time information.(6) And that means any business event dependent on timing can benefit.

Latest HP books prep for HP Certified Professional exams and aid in everyday IT practice!

Aligned with Business
"I have found this book to be an excellent primer for the technology and for exam preparation."
— Tom Pruett, Onsite Support Consultant
"The title indicates it is a book to study for passing the certification test. However, the book is an excellent source for a system administrator. Recently, at two separate customer sites, customers commented on how much they like this book."
— Chris Wong, Solution Architect for Cerius Technology Group, Inc.
"This book is designed to be a study guide, but will also most likely be used by system administrators as a reference guide, and should become a "standard" must have book."
— Bret Strong, HP UX System & Network
Administration instructor

Sept. 2004 -- By measuring the degree to which an individual can actually perform a job(1) and validating that with appropriate credentials, the HP Certified Professional program provides a solid value for potential candidates, employers, and customers.
Rapid innovation combined with increasing convergence of technologies has created demand for IT professionals with job skills that span multiple technologies and disciplines.(1) That means, despite high demand, applicants need technical competencies and credentials that set them apart.
Three new books from HP Books and an upgraded HP professional certification program put these competencies and credentials within reach. Together with the strongly recommended experience and training, each of the books offers up to date and comprehensive preparation for the exams. The CSA/CSE volumes include updates and added emphasis on HP UX 11i and Itanium® specific issues, added information on how to use HP UX web support web sites to download and install patches, and more information about troubleshooting and daily system administration tasks.

HP/SBA Matchmaking System Keeps Going Strong by Going Online
New Online Service Promises to Expand Buyer Participation and Small Business Access

by Rodney L. Merrill
Jul. 2003 -- Small businesses generate nearly half of the U.S. Gross National Product and 99% of all employment in the United States today.(1) They employ nearly 56 million people and account for more than two-thirds of all new jobs. When small businesses do well, the whole economy benefits.(1)
HP was once small, very small. In fact, it was originally just Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard working part-time from a residential garage. In honor of this heritage and special understanding of the needs of small businesses, HP has fostered the continued growth of its relationships with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Business Matchmaking program.
 |
Small Business Key to Economic Recovery |
In 2003, HP and the SBA entered into a cooperation agreement to create a small business breakthrough called Business Matchmaking. This program represents a true public/private partnership dedicated to helping small businesses, a cornerstone for the growth of the nation's economy, and one of the most important and real economic programs of 2004.(2) Business Matchmaking has a threefold mission 1) to give small businesses better direct access to bidding for contracts offered by the federal government and large corporations, 2) to help stimulate the economy while 3) simultaneously "spreading the wealth" across the country.
HP's New Enterprise Client Launch Delivers Greater Adaptability with a Lower Total Cost of Ownership

by Rodney L. Merrill
Jun. 2004 -- Change. It's here to stay.
Change is now the normal context for business. Business leaders have always felt the unrelenting pressure to do more with less. CIOs have always been expected to manage costs, reduce risks and increase quality of service. But today they do that from a control tower built on shifting sand. Denying change, downplaying its importance, and resisting it are not competitive strategies.
Simplicity. Agility. Security. These are the skillful means that work in an environment of flux and change. These qualities assure that the enterprise is adaptive, flexible, and resilient in the face of change.
HP has launched an array of devices that make enterprise expansion easier, more adaptive and more secure. These new devices include solutions that extend the span of Adaptive Enterprise into the client device market.
The launch includes desktop PCs and workstations firmly based on industry-standard designs, components, and practices. Engineered to deploy seamlessly into an existing infrastructure, these new products create an adaptive IT management environment. Applying these technologies to real world IT problems can make IT simpler and more secure while reducing the total cost of ownership.
The new line includes the HP Compaq dc7100, dc5000, dx6100 and dx2000 series business desktop PCs and the HP xw4200, xw6200 and xw8200 series personal workstations. (See sidebar on advances in workstation technology and price.) New client solutions include HP Altiris Local Recovery software and the HP ProtectTools Security Manager, now available for select HP business PCs.
"HP client devices and solutions support HP's Adaptive Enterprise strategy, provide value and help corporations more easily adapt to change through the combination of reduced total cost of ownership, increased security and a wide array of mobile and wireless solutions," said Duane Zitzner, HP's executive vice president of personal systems.

A Powerful Convergence of Possibilities Will Dramatically Simplify 1:1 Marketing Communications

|
May 2004 -- Hewlett-Packard has announced a strategic alliance with Quark, Inc. to simplify and enhance the creation, management and delivery of highly customized marketing communications. Quark, Inc., the world's leading developer of desktop publishing software solutions, intends to support HP's print management initiative aimed at enabling seamless workflow across multiple printing environments and devices. The goal of both parties in this alliance is to jointly create the infrastructure, solutions, and support needed to enable and transform 1:1 marketing for enterprise companies, agencies, and their print service providers.
 |
A Celebrated Alliance |
The alliance means that Quark will incorporate a new XTensions software module called QuarkXClusive, in their QuarkXPress 6 product. QuarkXClusive is optimized for HP output devices. And that means designers and marketers can feel confident that their Quark documents will print accurately and easily when used with HP printers and presses.
QuarkXPress, the market's most powerful layout software package and the industry standard, will simplify the complex task of creating VDP (variable data printing) and 1:1 marketing materials. From creation to actual production of 1:1 marketing materials, this new offering will energize early adoption of VDP by optimizing the print path from Quark applications to HP print devices.
This exclusive partnership is expected to offer the best variable data print solutions in the market today - both from a design and printing standpoint - and will empower the enterprise to undertake targeted publishing projects. HP and Quark will combine forces to advance and bring to market innovation in digital publishing solutions.
